Farm Favorites
When I first moved to the DC area, I got the urge to go to farms for fun. I grew up in a pretty country town in Florida (cow pastries on corners, etc.) and even rode horses growing up (for fun). But I didn’t become interested in having fun on farms until I moved here. And now, I actually plan to buy land and farm a little myself. I love fall festivals, flower festivals, petting zoos, and pick your own. I enjoyed all of this before my daughter was born so imagine how much fun I’m having now?! Here’s a list of my favorite farms in the DC metro area.
This was the first farm I ever picked strawberries at. We drove from our little apartment in NW and picked some yummy berries. They have plentiful picking and a flower stand. I recommend this one for You-Pick (strawberries and blueberries).
We visited this one for the first time this season. We drive past it all the time and didn’t realize what it was. I was pleasantly surprised. I was skeptical because of a few reviews but customer service was great. Despite the rain, there were plenty delicious berries. I recommend this one for You-Pick strawberries.
You’ve probably heard of this one. They do it all. We’ve been for the fall festival and pumpkin patch. It’s always a good time. But it’s probably the busiest farm on my list. It’s a little further out for us these days but definitely worth checking out. I recommend for almost everything (berries, sunflowers, or peonies).
This has been our go-to for apple-picking. We’ve been two years in a row. I think I keep going back because it’s huge and beautiful, but not crazy crowded. They have a corn maze, some farm animals and you-pick flowers. There’s a hayride on weekends. They also have strawberries! I recommend this one for apple picking.
This is our go-to for pumpkins. And they have a great festival too. All the fall fun you could imagine (hayride, petting zoo, corn maze, and slides/playground for different ages). The apple cider donuts are delicious too. I recommend this one for the fall festival/pumpkin patch.
We cut our first real Christmas tree in 2018 and now it’s an annual tradition. This place makes my Hallmark movie channel dreams come true. So beautiful. There’s a small market where you can buy real wreaths. I only wish they had a Santa and/or bonfires; something to help you take it all in. But I think their focus is getting folks in and out. The reviews aren’t perfect but we’ve never received bad service and our tree lasts all season.
Honorable mentions:
Homestead Gardens. — I love this place. We visit just for fun, flowers, Christmas trains, and the fall festival.
Shlagel Farms. —another one I visited for strawberry picking.
Baugher’s Orchard — my first time picking my own pumpkin. It’s too far away from us now but worth a visit if it’s closer to you.
Burnside Farms — I haven’t been in years; but it’s a great tulip option.
Some other good flower/garden options:
Netherlands Carillon, DC and Brookside Gardens —more tulip options.
